John grew up in Melbourne and trained as a pharmacist.
In 1990 after moving to Geelong he studied under Patricia Semmler at The Geelong Fine Art School, and later learned watercolour technique with master watercolourist Peter Eggleton.
Most of John's work begins as ' plein air' sketches, and some of these are later built up into larger paintings.
John has travelled extensively in Australia and overseas. Some of his travel diaries, a feature of his work, are on display at The Papermill Gallery.
